Holiday wine pairing advice

Dinner Party How To, Home Chef, Perfect Pairings, Wine — By KF Louis on November 12, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Ready or not, the holiday season is here.  And as if there isn’t enough to worry about – gifts to buy, decorations to get up, etc., etc. – if you are hosting a holiday meal you’re likely wondering what wine to pair with dinner.

Let me reiterate some advice from an earlier post:  don’t spend a lot of time playing sommelier during the holidays.  Instead, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Remember that if your gathering is a hodgepodge of people, it is likely a hodgepodge of drinkers as well. Have an assortment of beverages on hand – beer, soda, white and red wines — so that everyone can find something they enjoy.
  • Don’t break the bank.  Buy a few $7-15 dollar bottles and save the expensive wines for small, intimate dinner parties with guests who will appreciate an elevated level of sophistication and conversation about tasting notes.
  • Save your energy and keep things simple.  Holiday dinners are generally done potluck style, or with so many competing flavors that it’s pretty much impossible to perfectly pair one wine with the mish-mash plate of food you’ll likely be eating.
  • Carefully paired people will far more impact the pleasure of the evening than carefully crafted food and wine combos.  Spend time with those people you are truly thankful to have in your life.

Wishing you a very merry holiday season.  Cheers!
